Mobile operators may
challenge the guild of the telecom regulator Trai mandating a Re 1 penalty for
a dropped call, stating the bar is a "wrong answer" and neglects to
factor in the difficulties they confront in the rollout of telecom base. Tara
said the penalty, which will be restricted to three calls a day per consumer,
will be imposed from the new year as companies will need time to get to
"suitable provisions" in their organizations.
"Tara is of the opinion that the mandated regime would offer relief to consumers from the topic of call drops to some extent and spur the service providers to improve quality of service," the regulator said on Friday. "Tray will keep a tight vigil on the implementation of the mandate as well as the measures being initiated by the service providers to minimize the problem of dropped calls and may attempt a review after six months, if necessary."
